Vmware vsphere hypervisor vs (ESX/ESXi)

Vmware vsphere hypervisor vs (ESX/ESXi)

VMware ESX/ESXi is a type-1 hypervisor developed by VMware for creating and managing virtual computers.

As it is a type-1 hypervisor, it is not an application which installs on an operating system instead it acts like Operating system and virtualizes the physical server’s hardware and shares the resources to virtual machines.

In simple, if we want to create a virtual environment…Steps are,

Take a physical server
Install ESXi OS on it
Configure ESXi host with an IP address.
Connect ESXi host with the vSphere client.
Here we can create and manage virtual machines. (will see all these in step by step below)

What is ESX Vs ESXi

ESX and ESXi are the hypervisors sit on the bare metal. “bare metal” means that is the first thing we install on the server before any OS.
ESX (Elastic Sky X) is the VMware’s server virtualization platform, in this VM kernel is the virtualization kernel which is managed by Services console, which is based on Linux.ESXi (Elastic sky X Integrated) is also VMware’s server virtualization platform, in this service console is removed. ESXi uses Direct Console User Interface (DCUI) instead of service console.
ESXi installation is will be very quickly compared to ESX installation as it is a lightweight Operating system.
