Important files in Vmware


Virtual machine hardware will be in files. To see the virtual machine files, we need to browse the data store on the host or SAN storage where you created the machine.
On the summary page of the virtual machine > go to storage > right click on Datastore >Select ‘Browse Datastore’

Below are some important files which make up the virtual machine.

<VM Name>.VMX – Virtual machine configuration file will contain all the configuration of the virtual machine which you selected at the time of creating a Virtual machine.
<VM Name>.NVRAM – This file stores the BIOS information of Virtual machine.
<VM Name>.VMDK - Virtual Machine Hard disk file, which will have all user data and Operating system.
<VM Name>.VMSD - This is a centralized file for storing information and metadata about snapshots.
<VM Name>.VMSN - This is the snapshot state file, which stores the running state of a virtual machine at the time you take that snapshot.
<VM Name>.vmss - This is the suspended state file, which stores the state of a suspended virtual machine
